On Monday, May 25, 2026, the price of petrol and diesel increased for the fourth time in ten days, with the most recent increase being between 2.7 and 2.8 per litre nationwide and for all varieties.
Since the initial hike on May 15, the standalone prices of the two retail fuels have grown by approximately 7.5 per litre over the course of four tranches.
Additionally, on Monday, the price of petrol in Delhi crossed the 100 per litre threshold, which was last hit four years ago in May 2022, during the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

When Kolkata woke up, the price of petrol had increased by 2.87 per litre to 113.51 per litre. In Kolkata, the price of diesel went up from ₹2.80 to ₹99.82 per litre.
Chennai, on the other hand, saw a much smaller jump even though the effective price levels were comparable.

For over three months, India’s oil-marketing companies maintained stable fuel prices despite rising crude oil prices; nevertheless, beginning on May 15, part of the pressure was transferred.

Therefore, the increase on Monday, May 25, 2026, is the first significant increase in the past 10 days—that is, more than ₹1 per litre.
Up to May 22 of this month, India’s crude oil basket averaged $107.96 per barrel.
Additionally, with indications of a peace agreement between Iran and the United States, the global benchmark Brent crude futures (July) dropped almost 4.8% to $98.59 per barrel on Monday morning, reversing a protracted stay above $100 per barrel.
