On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Atanu Chakraborty submitted his resignation with immediate effect as HDFC Bank’s part-time chairman and independent director, citing “certain happenings and practices within the bank, that I have observed over the last two years, are not in congruence with my personal values and ethics.”
In his resignation letter, he stated, “This is the basis of my aforementioned decision.”
His letter continued, “I certify that there are no other significant reasons for my resignation other than those mentioned above.”
“We confirm that there are no reasons other than those mentioned in the said letter, for the resignation of’ Mr. Chakraborty,” the bank stated in a filing with exchanges.
Additionally, on March 18, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India approved Keki Mistry’s appointment as the Bank’s interim part-time chairman, effective March 19, 2026, for a term of three months, based on an application the Bank submitted in this regard.
Mr. Chakraborty joined the HDFC Bank Board in May 2021, and during his time there, significant events occurred, such as the bank’s merger with HDFC Ltd., which resulted in the creation of a conglomerate under the Bank.
HDFC Bank is now the nation’s second-largest bank thanks to this strategic initiative. However, the benefits of the combination have not yet fully materialised, he stated in his letter.
