After Sangeetha Sornalingam withdrew the petition today, the divorce case between Tamil Nadu president Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C Joseph Vijay and his wife was postponed. Sangeetha provided the court with her justifications for withdrawing the petition and participated in the proceedings via video conference.

Sangeetha filed for divorce in a Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, court back in February of this year, expressing her desire to end the marriage.

This year, there have been multiple postponements in Vijay and Sangeetha’s marital conflict. After Sangeetha declared her intention to withdraw the petition, the hearings were previously postponed on June 15. During that session, she also made an appearance via video conference and shared her decision with the court. On August 7, the case was scheduled for additional hearing.

The family court postponed the case last month as neither Vijay nor Sangeetha showed up. Both were missing on previous occasions as well; their attorneys appeared on their behalf and told the court that they were unable to attend the hearings in person.

Sangeetha dropped her request, and Friday’s order officially concluded the case.

In order to end her marriage to Vijay, Sangeetha filed a divorce case at the Chengalpattu family court. She stated in her petition that the couple’s irreconcilable disagreements were the reason for her divorce. In addition, she asked for permission to stay in the couple’s marital residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, and for perpetual alimony.

The relationship between Vijay and Sangeetha dates back almost thirty years. On August 25, 1999, the pair got married in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai.

August 26, 2000, saw the birth of their first child, a male, then a daughter in 2005.

When Sangeetha missed a number of significant public events with Vijay in 2023, rumors about marital problems began to circulate. Even tho those rumors were refuted at the time, concerns reappeared in 2025 when she failed to show up for significant political events hosted by the TVK, such as the party’s second state congress.

After decades of political dominance by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government in decades was subsequently formed by the party with the backing of the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
