Chennai: TVK chairman Vijay rejected as “false campaign” rumours of “alliance talks” for the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on Wednesday, without mentioning the NDA by name.
Speaking at an Iftar function in nearby Mamallapuram, Vijay stated that cadres might have been perplexed by rumours that TVK might form an alliance.
“We are firm on the stand that the government will be led by us (following a big win in the polls); there will be no compromise on secular, social justice principles,” he said, giving clear indications that TVK will not support the NDA in the 2026 TN Assembly elections.
TVK claimed to be a member of the “people’s team” and refuted claims that his party operated as a “B-Team.”
Vijay did not clarify who was accusing the “TVK as B-team,” though.
Claims that TVK would comply with the NDA have been circulating over the last five to six days. The “successful Jana Sena-TDP model of Andhra Pradesh” was allegedly being tried in Tamil Nadu, and Vijay would serve as Deputy Chief Minister like Pawan Kalyan.
Although TVK officials, such as CTR Nirmal Kumar, have earlier disregarded the notion of an alliance with the NDA, this is the first time Vijay has made it apparent that there would be no cooperation with the AIADMK-BJP combo.
According to TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna, his party was “offered the chief minister ship for 2.5 years and 90 Assembly seats,” out of the state’s 234 districts.
Arjuna’s declaration that his party will not “bow before Delhi” was interpreted as a hint to the BJP.
Since the AIADMK had always denied holding talks with Vijay’s party to form an alliance, it is assumed that the “2.5 years CM offer was only from the BJP, a key constituent of the NDA.”
