‘Toxic’: No support for Yash? Kannada superstars respond

Couple of days after Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups hit the screens worldwide, Kannada film buffs and fans of Yash rued that the actor wasn’t getting enough support for the movie from the industry. Yash has returned to the big screen after four years with Toxic, directed by Geetu Mohandas.

The film, a gangster drama with an emotional core, set during the independence era, also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria, Nayanthara, Kiara Advani and Huma Qureshi in prominent roles.

Toxic was released against movies that were enjoying a great run in theatres across languages. Ravi Teja, after a string of flops, had made a comeback with Irumudi, and the Telugu film fraternity, including stars such as Ram Charan and Rashmika Mandanna, took to social media to appreciate the movie. Nivin Pauly’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, is the Onam winner and received immense support from the Malayalam industry and fans.

Amid this, Kannada film fans expressed their disappointment on social media, saying an ambitious project from Yash deserved a strong response from industry members. Apart from playing the lead, Yash has co-written and produced the movie, touted to be made on a massive budget of ₹400 crore.

Two days after the release, the issue took a turn as experienced stars such as Upendra and Sudeep praised Yash for his efforts in Toxic.

“A new world and an entirely new experience,” wrote Upendra about the movie. “Hats off to Yash and his entire team.”

Kichcha Sudeep, who is currently working on the big-budget period drama, Billa Ranga Baasha, called Toxic an “unusual and commendable movie.”

“Yash, you have genuinely tried something out of the box rather than taking the predictable, formulaic follow-ups to your previous blockbusters,” wrote Sudeep. “It takes a different mindset, conviction, and most importantly, the guts to attempt something like this.”

Yash will next be seen as Ravana in Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Ranbir Kapoor essays the role of Ram while Sai Pallavi will play Sita. The movie will hit the screens on Diwali this year.
