Vice President-elect Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan will take the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on Friday, following CP Radhakrishan’s swearing-in. Radhakrishnan will take the oath of office from President Droupadi Murmu.
The opposition candidate and former Supreme Court justice B Sudershan Reddy received 300 votes, while NDA nominee Radhakrishnan received 452 votes to become India’s 15th vice president on Tuesday.
In the vice presidential polls, 767 of 781 MPs voted, yielding a 98.2 percent turnout. The necessary majority of first preference votes was reduced to 377 after 752 of these ballots were deemed valid and 15 were deemed invalid.
On paper, the NDA had the support of 427 MPs, but Radhakrishnan also had the support of 11 YSRCP lawmakers. It’s interesting to note that the NDA candidate received 14 more votes than anticipated, which led to rumors of cross-voting from the opposition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked CP Radhakrishnan after the results were announced and said he was confident the newly elected vice president will uphold India’s constitutional values and encourage constructive parliamentary debate.
During the election, at least 13 Members of Parliament did not cast ballots. One MP from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), seven from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and one Independent MP are among them.
