The new BCCI Junior Cricket Committee, which is set to be announced at the Board’s AGM next month, will have a new key responsibility: educating young cricketers about the dangers of drugs, betting and match-fixing. The BCCI has invited applications for five positions on the Junior Cricket Committee, with September 5 being the last date to apply. The BCCI has specifically listed promoting strong ethical values among young cricketers as one of the key responsibilities. This includes creating awareness about drugs, betting and match-fixing through interactions with senior and former players.
“Promoting strong ethical values among young cricketers, including awareness around issues such as drugs, betting and match-fixing, through interactions with senior and former players,” a BCCI release said.
The new panel will replace the current committee comprising S. Sharath (South, chairman), Krishan Mohan (North), Ranadeb Bose (East), Pathik Patel (West) and Harvinder Singh Sodhi (Central), which was appointed in September 2021 and has now completed its five-year term.
“Since these boys are vulnerable and there is so much money and fame riding even on U-19 cricket, the education should start early,” a BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The current committee’s last assignment will be the selection of the Rest of India U-23 squad for the Junior Irani Cup, featuring the CK Nayudu Trophy champions against the ROI U-23 side.
As part of its responsibilities, the new committee will select age-group teams up to the Under-22 level for coaching camps and India’s junior fixtures against domestic and international opposition, while also helping build a strong talent pool and bench strength.
The selectors will also scout and assess players during domestic and international matches and contribute to the selection and development of teams for camps, tours and tournaments in India and overseas.
Another important responsibility will be vetting and selecting coaches and support staff, including physiotherapists, trainers, therapists, analysts and medics, for the respective junior teams.
The committee will oversee the performance and development of junior sides, prepare periodic evaluation reports and appoint captains across formats.
It will also organise BCCI junior tournaments and overseas junior tours and deal with matters relating to their conduct and administration.
Applicants have to be former players who have played a minimum of 25 First-Class matches and must have retired at least five years ago.
Those who have served on any BCCI Cricket Committee, as defined by its Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations, for a cumulative period of five years will not be eligible.
