How Late In Pregnancy Can Women Still Travel?

Most European airlines carry a single uncomplicated pregnancy to the end of week 36, and easyJet to week 35. What the rules mean for late babymoon travel.

Most European carriers accept a single uncomplicated pregnancy until the end of the 36th week. easyJet stops at the end of the 35th week, while twins and other multiple pregnancies usually face a 32 week cutoff. The date that matters is not the outbound flight, but the return. A trip therefore needs to be planned backwards from the day the passenger intends to fly home.

Documentation rules also vary. British Airways and Ryanair both require a fit-to-fly letter from week 28, signed by a midwife or doctor. Lufthansa needs no certificate until the end of week 36, although it recommends carrying one from week 28. The NHS says flying is not harmful, but advises women with pregnancy complications to discuss their plans with a midwife or doctor first, and notes that after week 28 an airline may ask for a letter confirming the expected due date.

Together, these rules leave a larger travel window than many pregnant women assume. They have also helped create a small but distinct travel category: the third trimester retreat, designed for women who want to travel alone, prepare for birth and step away from normal routines before the baby arrives.

European pregnancy retreat operator mom’z gave the Solo Babymoon its name. It is a luxurious retreat for pregnant women, or a babymoon a mother takes alone to reset and reconnect. Fifteen pregnant women at a similar age and pregnancy stage, about half expecting a first baby and half already mothers, most of them used to being the one who organises everything. They travel mainly from urban cities like London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Zurich and even New York, and many are the only pregnant woman in their own circle.

The retreats welcome women from week 14 to week 35 and run every month of the year, at two private luxury estates in nature, one among vineyards about an hour from Barcelona, the other among gardens half an hour from Lisbon. A chauffeured group transfer collects guests from the airport or the city centre, and the programme runs in English.

“At 32 to 34 weeks, birth is close enough that the questions become very concrete, but there is still time to rest, think and prepare,” says mom’z founder and childbirth educator Shirin Fardi, who has led close to 100 retreats.

The week includes birth preparation classes, prenatal movement sessions, gourmet meals prepared by a health nutritionist, and a prenatal massage. Childbirth educators remain on site throughout. Midwives are on call 24 hours a day and a clinic specialising in prenatal care is a short drive away, which is unusual in this category and worth checking when comparing pregnancy stays.

Close to 1,000 women have attended since 2023, and each group keeps a curated WhatsApp community that stays active for years. A later pregnancy trip is often possible, but only when the airline rules, certificate requirements and return date have been checked carefully. Counting backwards is the place to start.
