In summary
After making a late cameo with the bat (32 off 17), Jofra Archer came back to disrupt the Mumbai Indians at both ends of their pursuit and help the Rajasthan Royals win by 30 runs to go to the playoffs. On May 27, the team led by Riyan Parag will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in the elimination match.
In the Powerplay, I rocked
Every role-playing game focuses on the actions and inactions of a fifteen-year-old. However, in what he refers to as “home ground” in domestic cricket, his 24-year-old opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal took the lead. He hit two sixes against Deepak Chahar and one off Will Jacks, but MI quickly overtook the top order. In an attempt to maximise his chances against Jacks, Jaiswal mistimed a powerful shot against a ball that turned slightly away from him. After failing to fly off the bat, Sooryavanshi found Naman Dhir at deep point in the fifth over, giving Chahar a wicket. Then, using a tossed-up delivery, AM Ghazanfar tricked Riyan Parag into a false shot, catching him at long range. In six, RR fell to 54/3.
MI won’t allow Jurel and Shanaka to change the course.
To save them, RR had to rely on the middle-order. Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka started to work and appeared to be able to put the pressure back on the home team via the middle. In the eighth over against Ghazanfar, Shanaka struck a huge six over long-on, and he replicated the feat against Raghu Sharma in the following over. As RR reached the midway point at 94/3, he dragged one over fine leg against Shardul Thakur. However, Shanaka was run out for a 15-ball 29 due to a mistake between the two hitters, nearly against the flow of the game.Jurel meanwhile, was able to middle every attempted hit and nudged RR ahead. He took 15 off Ghazanfar in the 12th over – a couple of exquisitely timed fours and a big six over square leg. But Corbin Bosch stopped him in his tracks in the following over with an exceptional inswinging yorker that Jurel couldn’t keep out. He walked off for a 26-ball 38.
An effective left-field Archer move
RR made an effort to use innovative batting strategies. Interestingly, Jofra Archer left at number five while Ravindra Jadeja was suited up and ready to enter as the impact player.
Donovan Ferreira, who had one of the visitors’ last chances to advance into the final stages, batted with Archer. However, MI made the slower bouncer work effectively for them this evening by digging their heels into this confused thinking. Chahar made extensive use of it, and in the sixteenth over, Ferreira found the deep mid-wicket fielder with a huge heave.
But Archer seized control with the bat from this point on. Archer hit a six over long-off in the over that Chahar dismissed Ferreira. He blasted two more sixes off Bosch over square leg and off Shardul over deep mid-wicket in the following two overs, further demonstrating his batting prowess. Before Shardul dismissed him for a 15-ball 32, he struck another four, which helped RR surpass the 200-run threshold.
The Powerplay slide from MI
Archer wasn’t finished yet. He went out and cleaned up Naman Dhir after getting Rohit Sharma to nick one behind for a duck in the first over. After hitting a four and a six in Nandre Burger’s opening over, Ryan Rickelton was dismissed by the South African in his second over. To maintain RR’s optimism, Brijesh Sharma floored Tilak Varma’s off-stump in the final Powerplay over.
Will Jacks backs Suryakumar Yadav as he finds form
Despite having a lacklustre season, the captain of India came with the assurance that he could deliver the ball to his preferred fine leg area. In order to gather sixes, he attacked Yash Raj Punja and Ravindra Jadeja. Will Jacks also contributed to the pursuit. Suryakumar had a lucky break when a delivery from Jadeja went off the top edge for a four to third man after hitting a Yash Raj floater into the stands.
As Kumar Sangakkara appeared quite thoughtful in a tense dugout, Jacks took advantage of a wayward ball from Yash Raj in the second half of the chase and smacked it for a straight six to keep RR on their toes. On the very next ball, Jacks tried a slog sweep, but Dhruv Jurel made a solid high catch to allay some of the head coach’s concerns. But Hardik Pandya exuded confidence and reversed that feeling.
What action did the captain of MI take?
He was having fun, making gestures and rejoicing with each shot that came off his bat. He began by dominating the wicket over by hitting two huge sixes against Yash Raj. Dasun Shanaka, Riyan Parag’s sixth bowling option, was also dismissed after Hardik hit two boundaries in his over, scoring 15.
Once more, Archer comes to RR’s aid
After the timeout, Parag attempted a last-ditch effort by bringing Archer back for his last over in the sixteenth. To add another wrinkle to this match, Archer, who could do no wrong today, rushed Hardik with a bouncer and had him caught at long on. He left MI to chase 56 off the final 24 deliveries after giving up just three runs in the over. Yash Raj then did a fantastic job of following that up. When he was trusted to bowl the 17th over, he gave just six runs after getting Bosch to hit one straight to the square leg fielder.
RR finishes it up nicely.
After a quick start to his innings, Suryakumar slowed down, and even though he scored a half-century, his dismissal in the 18th over almost guaranteed MI’s defeat. MI was 30 runs short after limping to 175/9 in 20 overs.
What will happen to the teams next?
With a humiliating ninth-place finish, MI is over for the season. For the playoffs, RR will travel to Mullanpur.
