According to U.S. media site Politico on Wednesday, U.S. and Russian negotiators are scheduled to meet this weekend in Miami, Florida, to discuss a peace agreement intended to settle the almost four-year-old Ukraine crisis.
According to the article, which cited two people familiar with the situation, the Trump administration will present the Russian side with the most recent developments following discussions with U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials in Berlin last weekend. The schedule is still up in the air.
According to the source, the Russian delegation is anticipated to comprise Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, while U.S. President Donald Trump’s personal envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are scheduled to represent the U.S. side.
Additionally, a separate meeting between the U.S. team and Ukrainian national security adviser Rustem Umerov is scheduled for this coming weekend in Miami or another U.S. location.
90% of the issues between U.S., European, and Ukrainian officials on a 20-point U.S. draft peace proposal were resolved at last weekend’s Berlin discussions, according to Trump administration sources.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has stated that if a peace deal is reached, Ukraine could halt its application to join NATO in exchange for Western security guarantees to avert future hostilities with Russia. Kyiv is requesting protections on par with those provided to alliance members, which the US has not yet provided.
As part of a concession in the peace process, he stated that Ukraine is prepared to accept security guarantees based on NATO Article 5, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
On Thursday, Zelenskyy will travel to Brussels for a pivotal European Union summit that will determine whether to lend Ukraine the almost $250 billion in frozen Russian sovereign assets to support its economic and military requirements.
He urged Ukraine’s allies to ensure backing for Kyiv. Zelenskyy stated, “The outcome of these meetings – the outcome for Europe – must be such that Russia feels that its desire to continue fighting next year will be pointless, because Ukraine will have support,” during his Wednesday evening speech.
Moscow has threatened to seize European private investors’ holdings in Russia in retaliation, claiming that any use of the assets constituted theft.
Putin warned in Moscow on Wednesday that if Kyiv and European leaders did not discuss U.S. ideas for a peace deal, Russia will use force to seize additional territory in Ukraine.
