Actress Kajol talked candidly and provocatively on the difficulties of raising a daughter in India, particularly one who has lived and educated overseas, in an interview with NDTV for the promotion of her new movie Maa. Speaking from personal experience, Kajol discussed her 22-year-old daughter Nysa Devgan, who studied in Switzerland and has a global outlook.
“She’s seen a different world,” commented 50-year-old Kajol. However, I keep telling her that this is India when she returns. You can’t go out wearing anything you want. You must exercise caution when it comes to the individuals around you and your attire.
Kajol acknowledged that she feels that these limitations are unjust, particularly when her 14-year-old son Yug Devgan receives very different treatment. “Whether he’s heading to the gym or not, he simply throws on a T-shirt and shorts and leaves. “There isn’t any hesitation,” she declared.
Kajol acknowledged the glaring gender gap, saying, “It’s just there. Society cannot be changed overnight. It is impossible to alter people’s thoughts. “When in Rome, live like the Romans,” she advised her daughter, giving her practical advice. “Adapt to where you are so you’re not uncomfortable,” she said.
Despite their seeming banality, Kajol’s remarks reveal a deeper dissatisfaction of having to raise a daughter in an unequal environment. “She sees it,” Kajol continued. “The slight unfairness of being a boy versus a girl, it’s there.”
The actor’s remarks bring to light the daily compromises that Indian women, in particular, must make when raising their children. Preparing young girls to properly navigate the unfairness is more important than accepting it.
Like her character in Maa, Kajol must strike a balance between protecting her kid and allowing her to develop in a culture that still views males and girls quite differently.
The renowned Chhorii filmmaker Vishal Furia is the director of the legendary horror movie Maa. Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak are producing the next film.
Maa, which will be released in theaters on June 27, 2025, also stars Indraneil Sengupta, Ronit Roy, and Jitin Gulati in important roles.
