There is a moment, somewhere beyond the glittering towers and manicured boulevards of Dubai, when the landscape begins to change.
The skyline falls away. The road stretches towards rugged mountains, the desert opens out beneath an enormous sky and the Arabian Gulf appears in flashes of blue beyond the dunes. This is Ras Al Khaimah — the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, and a destination that has quietly been rewriting the rules of Gulf tourism.
At the World Travel Awards Middle East Gala Ceremony 2026, held in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah’s growing prominence was once again reflected in a strong presence across the region’s most important tourism categories. The emirate was nominated for Middle East’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination, Leading Beach Destination, Leading Business Travel Destination, Leading Destination and Leading Meetings & Conference Destination, while the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority was among the contenders for Middle East’s Leading Tourist Board.
It is an impressive list, but perhaps the most revealing category is adventure tourism.
Because while Ras Al Khaimah has all the ingredients of a conventional luxury escape — five-star resorts, sweeping beaches, excellent restaurants and increasingly sophisticated wellness experiences — its greatest asset remains the landscape beyond the hotel gates.
The Hajar Mountains rise dramatically from the desert, creating a natural playground for hiking, climbing, mountain biking and other outdoor pursuits. At their heart is Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, where the road winds upwards through a landscape that feels remarkably removed from the glass towers and artificial islands associated with the Gulf.
It is this combination of luxury and wilderness that has given Ras Al Khaimah its particular identity.
The World Travel Awards have recognised that distinction before, with the emirate winning Middle East’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination 2025.
Yet adventure is only one part of the story.
Along the coast, Ras Al Khaimah has been steadily building a resort landscape that rivals the more established beach destinations of the UAE. Marjan Island has become the centrepiece, its hotels and waterfront developments stretching into the Gulf, while Al Hamra offers another polished combination of beaches, golf, dining and leisure.
Among the 2026 nominees for Ras Al Khaimah’s Leading Luxury Resort were Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah Resort, InterContinental Ras Al Khaimah Resort and Spa, Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, and Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah.
It is a line-up that says much about the evolution of the emirate.
There are sophisticated coastal resorts, secluded desert retreats and grand international hotels, allowing visitors to choose between different interpretations of luxury without leaving the same destination.
Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah Resort, for example, occupies a private peninsula where golden sands, mangroves and the Arabian Gulf create an unusually tranquil setting. The property combines beachside relaxation with access to the emirate’s mountains and desert, making it an almost perfect expression of Ras Al Khaimah’s hybrid personality.
Then there is The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, where the mood changes completely.
Set within the desert landscape, the resort turns the surrounding wilderness into the central experience. Private villas, wide-open views and the silence of the dunes create a form of luxury that feels increasingly relevant to travellers searching for space rather than spectacle.
The property was again nominated for Middle East’s Leading Luxury Desert Resort in 2026, a category it has historically performed strongly in, as well as for Middle East’s Leading Green Resort and several villa categories.
This ability to move effortlessly between mountains, desert and sea is perhaps Ras Al Khaimah’s greatest competitive advantage.
In a region where destinations often compete through scale, the emirate offers something rather more elemental.
Nature.
That is increasingly evident in its resort development. The 2026 nominees for Ras Al Khaimah’s Leading Resort included Al Hamra Residence, DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island, Jannah Hotel Apartments and Villas, Pullman Resort Al Marjan Island, Rixos Al Mairid, Rixos Bab Al Bahr and SO/ Ras Al Khaimah.
The range is striking.
Families can choose large-scale resorts with pools, beaches and children’s facilities. Couples can disappear into a private villa or desert retreat. Adventure travellers can use the coast as a base before heading into the mountains, while business visitors increasingly have sophisticated conference and resort facilities at their disposal.
The emirate’s established properties have also continued to perform strongly.
Hampton by Hilton Marjan Island, which won Ras Al Khaimah’s Leading Hotel in both 2024 and 2025, returned as a 2026 nominee. DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island, meanwhile, has built an impressive history of awards for both its family and overall resort offering.
But Ras Al Khaimah is not standing still.
The arrival of new hotels is broadening the destination’s appeal, with SO/ Ras Al Khaimah nominated for Middle East’s Leading New Resort and Leading Marina Hotel, while also featuring in the national resort category.
There is something particularly appealing about the fact that this development is happening without sacrificing the landscape that brought visitors here in the first place.
The desert remains desert. The mountains remain imposing. The coastline remains a place for long horizons and slow afternoons.
For travellers accustomed to the high-octane pace of Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah offers a different rhythm.
Mornings can begin with a mountain hike before the heat arrives. Afternoons belong to the beach or the spa. Evenings can be spent watching the sun disappear behind the Hajar Mountains before dinner beneath a sky increasingly free from the glow of the city.
It is luxury, certainly — but luxury with breathing room.
That distinction is becoming increasingly important in modern travel.
The new luxury traveller is often less interested in simply being surrounded by expensive things and more interested in having access to experiences that feel meaningful and difficult to replicate. And perhaps this is why Ras Al Khaimah has begun to attract such attention from the international travel industry.
It does not have to compete directly with Dubai.
Indeed, its success may depend on doing precisely the opposite.
Dubai offers energy, shopping, architecture and spectacle on a monumental scale. Abu Dhabi combines cultural institutions, beaches and grand hotels. Oman offers extraordinary wilderness and traditional hospitality. Saudi Arabia is building some of the world’s most ambitious new tourism destinations.
Ras Al Khaimah occupies a particularly attractive middle ground.
It has the infrastructure and service standards of the UAE, but the sense of space and natural drama associated with more remote destinations.
For families, it offers easy beach holidays. For couples, secluded luxury. For adventure seekers, mountains and desert. For wellness travellers, increasingly sophisticated retreats. For business travellers, resorts and conference facilities that allow meetings to be combined with genuine leisure.
The World Travel Awards nominations reflect precisely that breadth. Ras Al Khaimah appeared not only among the region’s leading adventure and beach destinations but also in business travel, meetings and conferences and the overall Leading Destination category.
Its tourism authority’s nomination for Middle East’s Leading Tourist Board is equally significant.
Behind the scenes, the emirate’s travel industry is expanding alongside its hotel portfolio. National awards in 2026 included categories for destination management companies, tour operators and travel agencies, with Arab Expedition, Momento Destination & Events, Safarak, StopOverTrips.com, Adventurati Outdoor, Gulf Tours, Cozmo Travel, Jamal Travel Agency and Nirvana Travel and Tourism among the nominees.
The picture that emerges is of a destination becoming more sophisticated without losing the qualities that first made it interesting.
There is a confidence to Ras Al Khaimah now.
The emirate no longer needs to explain why travellers should venture beyond the traditional Dubai itinerary. The reasons are visible in the landscape.
Come for the mountains.
Stay for the beach.
Return for the desert.
And somewhere between them, discover a quieter, more elemental side of the United Arab Emirates.
The 2026 World Travel Awards have provided another reminder that Ras Al Khaimah is no longer simply the UAE’s best-kept secret.
It is becoming one of the Middle East’s most compelling new luxury escapes — a place where adventure and indulgence share the same address, and where the greatest attraction may still be the extraordinary landscape beyond the resort gates.
