Brics stresses energy security, uninterrupted supplies and diverse energy sources while supporting a just, orderly and inclusive transition to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Brics has backed a balanced energy transition, stressing that the shift to cleaner energy must not come at the cost of energy security, particularly for emerging markets and developing economies.
The bloc, in its New Delhi Declaration 2026, on Saturdaty acknowledged that fossil fuels will continue to have a role in the global energy mix while calling for a “just, orderly, equitable and inclusive” energy transition.
The bloc also highlighted the need to strengthen energy value chains and improve the resilience and protection of critical energy infrastructure, including cross-border infrastructure.
“We acknowledge fossil fuels will still play an important role in the world’s energy mix, particularly for emerging markets and developing economies,” the declaration said.

Brics acknowledged that fossil fuels will continue to play an important role in the global energy mix, particularly for emerging markets and developing economies.
At the same time, the grouping backed “just, orderly, equitable and inclusive energy transitions” aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate goals and Sustainable Development Goal 7 on affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.
The declaration stressed that energy transition policies should take into account national circumstances, needs and priorities, while respecting the principles of technological neutrality and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.

Energy cooperation and youth participation
Brics also welcomed the work of the Brics Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP), which is aimed at facilitating greater cooperation among member countries on energy-related issues.
The grouping further welcomed the convening of the Brics Youth Energy Summit, with an emphasis on increasing the participation of women and young people in energy discussions across the bloc.
The declaration’s energy agenda comes as Brics seeks to strengthen cooperation across energy security, infrastructure, technology and sustainable development, while recognising the differing energy needs and priorities of emerging markets and developing economies.
