‘Digger’ final trailer: Tom Cruise plays an oil tycoon who must save a world he helped destroy

Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Digger, giving audiences a fresh look at Tom Cruise’s eccentric performance in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s first English-language feature in a decade. Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an immensely powerful oil tycoon whose own actions help trigger a catastrophic global disaster, leaving him scrambling to convince the world that he can save humanity.

The new footage leans further into the film’s absurdist tone, with Cruise sporting a grey combover, prosthetic makeup and a pronounced Southern accent as the deeply self-important Rockwell. After his company’s activities unleash an ecological catastrophe with potentially apocalyptic consequences, Digger embarks on a frantic campaign to reverse the damage while attempting to preserve his reputation as the man capable of fixing it.

Iñárritu has described the film as a disaster movie in which humanity itself becomes the disaster. The director developed the project for roughly a decade, with the story examining the relationship between greed, power and responsibility through Digger’s increasingly desperate attempts at redemption.

The cast includes Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons, with Goodman playing the U.S. president who calls upon Digger to help confront the unfolding crisis. Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, Robert John Burke and Pip Torrens also feature.

Digger reunites Iñárritu with several of his longtime collaborators, including Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and editor Stephen Mirrione. The film was shot entirely in VistaVision, giving the director an expansive photographic format for the increasingly surreal spectacle.

The film opens in India on October 2, 2026.
