Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Saturday that the government has extradited 42 fugitives in the last two years and promised to bring many more back once the nations where they are currently detained have completed their legal proceedings. The senior BJP politician discussed his thoughts on repatriating fugitives who have escaped after perpetrating financial frauds during an appearance on NDTV’s Bihar Power Play conference.

Liquor magnate Vijay Mallya and diamantaire Nirav Modi are two of the fugitives wanted in India for scams totaling thousands of crores. In the UK, both are awaiting extradition proceedings, which must be completed in order to return them to India.

Shah claimed that Indian agents are chasing such fugitives in accordance with the norms, although calling the extradition procedure “very complex.”

“The technique is really intricate. It entails negotiating the legal systems and legal processes of multiple nations. For this reason, we have set up ‘India Net’ under the CBI, which sends out Blue Corner alerts to fugitives all over the nation, employs Interpol to apprehend them, and then manages the whole extradition procedure,” the minister stated.

Shah promised that extradition cases against a number of fugitives are still pending and will be brought following the legal process. He noted that after holding workshops with all authorities, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been created for these extraditions.

Approximately forty-two fugitives have been returned to India in the past two years. Court cases are sometimes in progress in those nations. Only a small number of people are unpunished,” Shah continued.

The minister attacked the opposition, claiming that the previous UPA government had no fear of the agencies. “The fugitives are at least being hunted down since our government took office. They are being apprehended, and the process of moving people from prisons overseas to prisons here is also in progress,” he continued.
