Inter Miami overcame a 2-0 aggregate deficit against Los Angeles FC to win 3-1 (3-2) thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami defeated Los Angeles FC 3-1 (3-2 overall) on Wednesday to advance to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final four after falling down 2-0 overall. Miami was in serious jeopardy after losing 1-0 in the first leg when Aaron Long gave LAFC the lead in the ninth minute. With a beautiful drive from outside the box in the 35th minute, Messi pulled Miami back into the match, but Javier Mascherano’s team still needed two more goals. When Noah Allen chipped a ball into the box that night, neither Los Angeles goalie Hugo Lloris nor Miami midfielder Federico Redondo touched the ball as it passed them and into the goal, giving them a 2-1 lead.

When Luis Suarez headed in a cross from Messi, Miami believed they had it, but the assistant referee declared the Uruguayan forward to be offside. Miami still needed another.

However, Miami’s request for a handball by Marlon after a tense battle in the area, which a VAR review determined the Brazilian defender had handled, provided a lifeline.

Messi completed Miami’s comeback and secured their spot in the last four by putting the spot kick in the 84th minute into the corner.

However, LAFC came within three seconds of winning the game when Denis Bouanga twice forced saves from Oscar Ustari, who was also put to the test by a header from Ryan Hollingshead.
