Days after a US federal court dismissed the Department of Justice’s criminal case against him, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani addressed employees and partners across the conglomerate, framing the ordeal not as vindication but as a lesson in patience, humility and faith in due process.
Speaking on the second edition of his address series “Apni Baat, Apno Ke Saath,” delivered ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day, Adani spoke to a workforce spanning more than 700 locations and over three lakh employees and partners. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York had dismissed the DoJ’s case against him on August 10, closing out a legal battle that followed allegations first raised by Hindenburg Research.
Adversity as a test of character
Rather than dwelling on the legal victory, Adani used the moment to reflect on what the episode revealed about the organisation’s values. Invoking the mythological churning of the ocean, Samudra Manthan, he said hardship doesn’t shape who you are; it exposes who you already were. The Hindenburg allegations and the DoJ proceedings, he said, tested the Group’s principles without changing them.
He pointed to the Group’s decision to pull its Rs 20,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer in 2023 — a move it wasn’t legally required to make — as proof of that philosophy in action.
“Trust is greater than any legal right,” Adani said, adding that while the law grants entitlements, values determine when it’s right to actually use them.
Business as usual, even under scrutiny
Adani said the company stayed focused on execution throughout the legal proceedings, continuing to deliver on commitments even as it faced intense public and media attention. He noted that the Group posted some of its strongest business results during this period, pushing forward major infrastructure projects and expanding its footprint across sectors while, behind the scenes, employees, contractors and vendors kept operations running largely unaffected by the headlines.
He also credited ordinary well-wishers, strangers who sent messages of support during the Group’s toughest stretch with reinforcing his faith in people, and said even the Group’s critics deserved thanks, since scrutiny, whatever its motive, forces an organisation to reflect and improve.
Roots in family values
Adani traced his outlook back to his upbringing: his father’s insistence that a promise, once made, must be kept, and his mother’s quiet example of sacrifice. Leaving home as a teenager to chase opportunity, he said, taught him things no classroom could comparing character to an uncut diamond that only reveals its brilliance under pressure. He said his journey mirrors that of many in the Adani Parivar who left familiar surroundings behind in search of a better future.
He also recalled a conversation with a young engineer at the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, saying it reminded him that development isn’t just about world-class infrastructure; it’s measured in the hope and dignity it brings to people’s lives.
Looking to Viksit Bharat
Tying his remarks to India’s upcoming Independence Day, Adani said the milestone was a chance to reflect on what the current generation would be remembered for as the country works toward Viksit Bharat – a “developed India.” He said history will judge this era not just by the infrastructure built, but by the opportunities created and communities strengthened along the way.
He closed by urging employees and partners to carry the lessons of the past two years forward with humility and integrity, framing the task ahead not merely as building successful businesses, but institutions that outlast individuals and contribute to a stronger, self-reliant India.
