Bernie Sanders says Democrats must use their control of Congress to hold Donald Trump accountable while stepping up efforts to tackle income and wealth inequality.
Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders has welcomed the Democrats’ performance in the US midterm elections, saying the party will now have the power to hold President Donald Trump accountable.
“Democrats will now control the House and Senate and be able to hold Trump accountable. That’s great,” Sanders said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
However, the senator stressed that the party’s electoral gains should translate into concrete action on economic issues, particularly income and wealth inequality.
“At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, we must do more. We must aggressively fight for working families. No more excuses,” he added.
Sanders’ remarks come as Democrats make significant gains in the midterm elections, which concluded on Tuesday. The elections were marked by voter frustration over rising living costs, the war in Iran and concerns about government corruption.
Democrats have already flipped seven seats in the House of Representatives as they seek to wrest control of the chamber. The race for the House majority, however, remains too early to call.
The battle for control of Congress is particularly consequential for Trump, as the party holding majorities in the House and Senate can significantly influence his legislative agenda, government spending and administration oversight.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could also intensify scrutiny of the Trump administration through congressional investigations and hearings.
For Sanders, however, the immediate challenge extends beyond political accountability. His message underscores the economic concerns that have shaped the election campaign, with affordability and the financial pressures facing American households emerging as major issues.
The senator has repeatedly called for policies that prioritise working-class Americans, higher wages and a more equitable distribution of wealth.
