With effect from this year, unmarried couples will no longer be permitted to check in at partner hotels, according to a new check-in policy introduced by travel booking giant OYO, which will begin in Meerut.

All couples, including those who make reservations online, will be required to provide legitimate proof of their relationship at the time of check-in under the updated policy. According to the corporation, OYO has given its partner hotels the authority to reject a couple’s reservation based on their own discretion, in accordance with local social sensibilities.

OYO has instructed its partner hotels in Meerut to make sure of this right away. According to those aware with the policy change, the corporation may decide to expand this to further cities based on input from the ground.

“Civil society organizations, particularly in Meerut, have already provided input to OYO requesting action to solve this issue. Residents of a few other cities have also petitioned to ban unmarried couples from checking in at OYO hotels, the statement read.

“OYO is dedicated to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality practices,” said Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, in an interview with PTI. We acknowledge our obligation to cooperate with law enforcement and civil society organizations in the micromarkets we operate in, even as we uphold individual liberties and freedoms. We will keep reviewing this policy and its effects on a regular basis.

According to the corporation, the campaign is a component of OYO’s plan to update its antiquated image and position itself as a brand that offers secure travel experiences for families, students, business travelers, religious travelers, and lone travelers.

The initiative also seeks to increase consumer loyalty and trust by promoting longer stays and repeat reservations.

It further stated that OYO has launched pan-Indian programs, including collaborative seminars on safe hospitality with law enforcement and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels accused of encouraging immoral behavior, and taking action against unapproved hotels that use OYO branding.
