What is the experience?
Visama Explorer Nan is an intimate and quite luxurious tented camp set in a highland valley in Nan Province, northern Thailand. With eight safari tents, the camp offers a quiet base for exploring the mountains, forests, villages and cultural traditions of remote Nan province while enjoying the comfort of spacious, air-conditioned tented suites.
Where is it?
Visama Explorer Nan is in Ban Wen village, Bo Kluea district, a 2.5-hour drive north from Nan city, which has daily 75-minute flights from Don Muang airport in Bangkok.
How to get there?
Most visitors fly in from Bangkok and take the scenic transfer which stops at temples and viewpoints. Many Thailand residents prefer the 10-hour drive from Bangkok. The journey takes guests through highlands and becomes part of the experience.

What are the three things I must do there?
On the way there visit Wat Phumin temple in Nan city, famous for its evocative murals and main prayer hall with four Buddhas. Explore the mountains and forests around Bo Kluea with a local guide, including the Sapan waterfall. In Visama Explorer Nan itself, spend an evening at The Ambalama, an intimate outdoor setting where you can watch a heritage movie beside a fire pit with drinks served from a WWII US Army jeep converted to a bar.
What should I eat there?
Must-try dishes include khao soi northern Thai noodles, geng hang lay rich Lanna curry, yam pak grud fern salads, and piquant pastes such as nam prik noom and nam prik ong.
How responsible and sustainable are glamping operations there?
The camp’s aim is to protect forests, rivers and wildlife, while using locally sourced materials and furnishings to the greatest extent possible. The flora in the gardens is remarkable – a mixture of frangipani, Elephant’s Ear, Morning Glory blooms, pendulous Rock Trumpets and burgundy-purple Coleus shrubs. The tented camp prides itself on adhering to the 4Cs of responsible tourism: conservation, community, culture and commerce.
Does the local community benefit from my stay?
