Lionsgate has officially approved a sequel called The Housemaid’s Secret in response to The Housemaid’s enormous box office success. In just two and a half weeks, the original Sydney Sweeney picture has made $133 million globally, making it one of the most successful thrillers of early 2026.

The Housemaid centers on Millie (Sweeney), a young lady with a troubled history who works as a live-in housemaid for the affluent couple Andrew Winchester (Brandon Skelnar) and Nina (Amanda Seyfried), exposing dangers and secrets in the home. Enzo, Millie’s ally and groundskeeper for the Winchester family, is played by Michele Morrone. The R-rated thriller, which has made $75.7 million in North America despite having a $35 million budget, also stars Elizabeth Perkins. Taylor Swift’s song “I Did Something Bad,” which hinted to Millie’s next move, was played before the movie’s closing credits.

“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s motion picture group, in response to the announcement of the sequel.

The director, creative team, and returning cast

Sweeney, Paul Feig, and Morrone will all be back in the follow-up, with Feig directing once more. The second book in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy will be adapted by screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine. Along with Carly Elter and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures, Sweeney and McFadden will be executive producers.

“We are incredibly excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney,” Fogelson continued. We’re excited to turn The Housemaid’s Secret, another incredibly exciting book in Freida’s series that has enthralled readers all over the world, into an equally exuberant and wild cinematic experience.”

The first novel in the Housemaid series has been translated into 40 languages, sold over 12 million copies worldwide, and spent 65 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Production on the sequel is scheduled to start later in 2026.
