Actor Sweta Keswani, who has over ten years of experience in the US, recently expressed her unvarnished thoughts on Priyanka Chopra’s influence on South Asian representation in Hollywood. The Baa Bahu Aur Baby actress told India Today that although she admires Priyanka’s accomplishments, she doesn’t think the international celebrity has used her platform to support other South Asians.
“There are no two ways about it; I think what Priyanka has done is amazing. She isn’t Mindy Kaling, though. Other South Asians are not being helped by her. Being completely honest is only beneficial to her. She is self-centered,” Sweta said.
“In reality, Mindy Kaling is assisting others in achieving success.”
Sweta Keswani compared Mindy Kaling to Priyanka Chopra in the same interview, stating that the latter’s endeavors to provide opportunity for others are genuinely admirable.
The fact that Mindy Kaling is writing, producing, and assisting other South Asians in breaking through in the industry—which is extremely difficult for women of color—makes her work truly remarkable, Sweta continued.
The actress continued by talking about her personal experiences in Hollywood and stating that there are “cliques” even among South Asians. “I feel like there are cliques just like everywhere,” she said. Thus, some people will call specific people, like particular people, and form cliques. Regretfully, I don’t belong to any South Asian social circles.
