Later, Sir Keir Starmer takes a plane to Canada to meet with Mark Carney, the former Bank of England governor who was elected prime minister in March.

Prior to the G7 meeting, which Carney is hosting and which starts in the province of Alberta on Sunday, the two leaders will meet on Saturday night in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

It will be the first time world leaders have met in person since Israel’s attacks on Iran.

Security and trade will be the main topics of the two prime leaders’ Saturday negotiations.

The objective, according to Carney’s office, was to “strengthen the long-standing economic and security partnership between the two nations.”

A disagreement over cheese and beef caused the UK and Canada’s trade deal negotiations to collapse early last year, just before the British general election.

Officials from both sides have since kept in touch, but according to a Whitehall source, the discussions have been “not in earnest…not anything substantial” thus far.

During a period of economic instability following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Downing Street has been proudly highlighting three recent international trade agreements with the US, India, and the EU.

Regarding President Trump, the two prime ministers have taken somewhat different public stances.

Critics have viewed Sir Keir’s approach to his interactions with the US president as fawning.

Carney was often direct in his denial of Trump’s claim that Canada was the 51st state in the union.

He was also irritated that, in the middle of that questioning of Canada’s sovereignty, Sir Keir had theatrically extended an invitation for the president to visit the UK.

For the G7 summit, Sir Keir and Carney will take a plane to Kananaskis, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies, on Sunday.

They will participate in three days of negotiations alongside Trump and the presidents of France, Italy, Japan, Germany, and the EU.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, will also attend.
