At the age of 81, former Union Minister and Congressman Shriprakash Jaiswal passed away in Kanpur on Friday following a protracted illness.

As the minister’s condition deteriorated today, he was taken to the Kanpur Cardiology Hospital. Upon arrival, a team of doctors examined him and pronounced him dead.

In 1989, Jaiswal was elected Mayor of Kanpur, marking the start of his political career. He became a well-known figure in the area and won the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat three times in a row, in 1999, 2004, and 2009.

Later, he worked for Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the Congress-led UPA government as Minister of State for Home Affairs from May 2004 to May 2009. In January 2011, he was promoted to the Cabinet as Union Minister of Coal, a position he held until the end of the government’s term in May 2014.

Additionally, from 2000 to 2002, Jaiswal presided over the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

He was born in Kanpur, finished his education at BNSD Inter College, and married Maya Rani in 1967. He had a daughter and two boys.
