The Rashtrapati Bhavan offered an unusual reaction today to senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s on-camera statements referring to President Droupadi Murmu as a “poor thing”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the remarks as a “full display of arrogance of the Congress’ first family”.

Could barely speak.

Poor lady, the President was exhausted by the end. No… she could barely speak, poor creature. Sonia Gandhi

Lowers dignity.

Comments plainly undermine the dignity of the high position and are therefore unacceptable. Rashtrapati Bhavan

Sonia, head of the Congress Parliamentary Party, was seen on tape replying to Murmu’s address, stating, “Poor lady, the President was getting quite exhausted by the end. No… she could barely speak, poor creature.” Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, told his mother, who was approached by media to remark on the President’s Address, that it was “boring.” “No comments…repeating the same thing over and over”.

The President’s House later issued a statement that did not identify anyone but stated, “Some prominent leaders of Congress have made comments that clearly hurt the dignity of the high office and are thus unacceptable.” These leaders have stated that toward the conclusion, the President was exhausted and could barely talk.

The statement concluded that nothing could be further from the truth. “The President was not fatigued at any time. She believed that speaking up for underprivileged communities, women, and farmers, as she did during her speech, could never be exhausting. The President’s administration believes that these leaders may have acquired an incorrect impression because they were unfamiliar with the idiom and discourse of Indian languages such as Hindi. In any event, such remarks are in poor taste, unpleasant, and absolutely unnecessary,” the statement continued.

PM Modi blasted the Congress during a political rally in Delhi, saying, “President Murmu addressed the Parliament today. However, a member of the royal family described the language as monotonous. “The words of urban naxals appear to be more interesting to them,” Modi added.

Earlier, BJP chief JP Nadda spearheaded the onslaught on Sonia, seeking an unequivocal apology from her. “I strongly deplore Sonia Gandhi’s use of the words “poor thing” to describe the President. The use of such language demonstrates the Congress’ elitist and anti-tribal mindset. “The party must apologize to the President,” Nadda stated.
