On Wednesday, the workplace messaging app Slack experienced outages. At its height, over 3,000 users reported issues with the service on DownDetector at approximately 11 a.m. EST, though by 3 p.m. EST, the number of reported issues had drastically decreased.

At 10:27 a.m. EST, Lack’s tech dashboard initially revealed problems with users connecting or loading the communication platform.

Around 3 p.m. EST, just 439 users reported problems with Slack on DownDetector, a website that monitors platform failures based on user reports. This is a decrease from the peak of roughly 3,100 users at approximately 11:40 a.m.

Updates will be given as they become available, according to Slack, which stated at 12:26 p.m. EST that its “investigation is still in progress with regard to deprecated functionality for Slack features such as workflows, threads, sending messages, and API-related features.”

At 3:05 p.m. EST, Slack stated that it was still “working to restore functionality to affected Slack features,” despite claims that it was working for more users.

Slack claimed to have “identified the cause of the issue” at 3:34 p.m. EST, but it is “still not fully resolved” and some users may continue to have issues.

What Parts Of Slack Are Down?

As of 3:05 p.m. EST, there were no reported problems with notifications, search, files, huddles, workspace management, or canvases, but Slack’s tech dashboard showed that users were experiencing difficulties with logging in, messaging, apps/integrations/APIs, and workflows.

Key Background

Salesforce, the owner of the cloud-based messaging service Slack, declared in 2020 that it would buy the platform. It operates in more than 150 countries and has over 200,000 paying customers. Stewart Buttefield, who had contributed to the creation of the photo-app Flickr, founded the company in Vancouver in 2009 with the goal of creating “an artful, non-combat massively multiplayer online game,” according to TechCrunch. After Glitch finally failed, Butterfield informed investors in 2012 that the business will begin developing a workplace chat app. It was well received and in high demand when it debuted at the end of 2013.

Big Number

$27.7 billion. In late 2020, Salesforce made its largest acquisition to date when it paid that sum to acquire Slack.
