The cricket community as a whole was shocked by Rohit Sharma’s decision to withdraw from Test cricket. Rohit made a shocking announcement by leaving the red-ball format just as discussions about the series’ team selection were getting underway, even though it appeared that the India skipper would be leading the troops on the trip of England. Even in the whites, Rohit bows out as a great of the game. The great Sachin Tendulkar paid respect to the 38-year-old with an emotional message.
You have had an incredible trip; I recall giving you your Test cap at Eden Gardens in 2013 and then standing with you on the balcony of Wankhede Stadium the other day. As a player and captain, you have given Indian cricket your all ever since. “Congratulations on your Test career, Rohit, and best wishes for the future,” Sacin posted on X (Twitter).
I remember presenting you with your Test cap in 2013 at Eden Gardens and then standing with you on the balcony of Wankhede Stadium the other day – your journey has been a remarkable one.

From then to now, you have given your best to Indian cricket as a player and as a captain.… pic.twitter.com/PwoQiKGvUr
Even Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit’s longtime colleague from Mumbai and India, was taken aback by his call. Rahane was not informed of Rohit’s departure from Test cricket on the same day that his IPL team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, faced the Chennai Super Kings in a crucial match here on Wednesday.
The seasoned batter, who has a strong relationship with Rohit from their time together in Mumbai, promised to get in touch with him shortly.
“Oh, is it? All I can do is wish him luck. He performed incredibly well in the test format, in my opinion. When the KKR captain spoke to the media following a two-wicket defeat to the Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens, he remarked, “I didn’t know (about the retirement).”
In fact, I’m shocked. He retired in the test format, but I was unaware of that. However, I simply want to wish him luck,” he continued.
Rahane, 36, is a highly regarded Test specialist who has been out of favor over the past two years, but he has steadfastly refused to give up on his own goal of returning to the national team.
Rohit’s development as a red-ball cricket player and his aggressive mentality at the top of the order were praised by Rahane.
“Regardless of his ambitions, he has performed admirably and raised his level as a Test batter. He opened the innings after starting his career with a 5–6 record, Rahane remarked.
I found it fascinating to watch how he adjusted to the opening spot. He always desired to play freely and challenge the bowlers. And he hoped that more players would follow suit, playing freely. After a red-ball career that started in 2013, Rohit, 38, declared his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect.
