Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for portraying Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, with his agent Kevin Motley confirming his death. His family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series in 1984, establishing the deep, authoritative baritone that became inseparable from the Autobot leader. He reprised the role in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986 and continued voicing Prime across animated projects and video games before returning for Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers franchise in 2007. His most recent live-action appearance as the character came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Cullen drew inspiration for Optimus Prime from his older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran. When Cullen told his brother he was auditioning to voice a heroic truck, Larry advised him to approach the character with strength and gentleness rather than any exaggerated, heroic bravado. Cullen subsequently based Prime’s voice and temperament partly on his brother, giving the character an unusual sense of authority and warmth.
Optimus Prime was far from Cullen’s only iconic role. He also voiced Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous subsequent Winnie the Pooh projects, as well as KARR in Knight Rider and Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers. He provided the vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 film Predator and voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake.
Cullen’s career spanned more than five decades across animation, television, film and video games. His work as Optimus Prime eventually extended across the entire live-action film series, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight, Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
