According to a recent report by the election monitor Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 12,547 donations totaling ₹2544.278 crore were made to five major political parties in India in 2023–2024.

Of this, ₹2,243.947 crore in donations of ₹20,000 or more were given to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2023–2024. According to the records that the political parties have provided to the Election Commission of India (EC), this sum is roughly seven times the amount that the opposition Congress party collected (₹281.48 cr from 1994 donations).

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the National People’s Party (NPEP), and the Communist Party of India (M) are the four national political parties in addition to the BJP and the Congress. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the sixth national political party, reported that during FY 2023–2024, it did not receive any donations over ₹20,000.

Which state gave political parties the largest donations? Based on the addresses that the parties submitted in their donations report to the Indian Election Commission, the ADR divided donations by state.

Delhi might only have seven seats in the Lok Sabha. But last year, the nation’s capital gave the most to political parties. The national parties received donations of ₹989.20 crore from Delhi, ₹404.512 crore from Gujarat, and ₹334.079 crore from Maharashtra. Telangana contributed ₹112.9 crore, while Tamil Nadu contributed another ₹142.7 crore.

In 2023–2024, national political parties received donations of approximately ₹554.7 crore from other states and Union Territories.

According to the ADR report, AAP has received a ₹7000 donation from a contributor in the United States.

The ADR report stated that because of the parties’ incomplete or unreported information, a total of ₹6.062 crore could not be assigned to any state or Union Territory.

What was revealed in the ADR report?

ADR’s analysis indicates that in 2023–2024, the BJP reported more than six times the total donations reported by the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), National People’s Party (NPEP), and Communist Party of India M.

The national parties reported a total of ₹2544.278 crore in donations (above ₹20,000) from 12,547 donations for FY 2023–2024.

Donations from corporations

Corporate donations to the national parties totaled ₹2262.5 crore, or 88.9271 percent of the total amount donated. According to the ADR report, during FY 2023–2024, the parties received ₹270.872 crore (10.6463 percent of total donations) as individual donations.

According to the report, the BJP received ₹2064.58 crore in corporate donations and an additional ₹169.126 crore in individual donations in FY 2023–2024.

The Congress party announced ₹281.48 crore in 1994 donations, while the BJP announced ₹2243.947 crore from 8,358 donations.

In 2023–2024, the AAP got approximately ₹11 crore, the CPI (M) approximately ₹7.6 crore, and the NPEP approximately ₹0.14 crore in donations.
