India’s unemployment rate eases to 5.0 % in August from 5.1 % in July

India’s unemployment rate fell to 5 per cent in August, a six-month low, government data showed on Tuesday, with the decline driven largely by improving labour market conditions in rural areas.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) monthly bulletin for August 2026, released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), the overall unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above declined marginally from 5.1 per cent in July to 5.0 per cent in August.

The improvement was more pronounced in rural areas, where the unemployment rate fell to 4.1 per cent in August from 4.5 per cent in July, marking its lowest level since January 2026. Urban unemployment, meanwhile, remained broadly stable at 6.8 per cent, compared with 6.7 per cent in July.

The labour market also saw a rise in participation. The overall labour force participation rate (LFPR) for people aged 15 years and above increased to 55.6 per cent in August from 55.4 per cent in July. Rural LFPR rose to 58.2 per cent from 58.0 per cent, while urban LFPR remained unchanged at 50.4 per cent.

The worker population ratio (WPR), another measure of employment, strengthened to 52.8 per cent in August from 52.5 per cent in July, its highest level since March 2026. Rural WPR increased to 55.8 per cent from 55.4 per cent, while urban WPR stayed at 47 per cent.

On a year-on-year basis, overall LFPR increased by 0.6 percentage point from 55.0 per cent in August 2025 to 55.6 per cent in August 2026. Rural LFPR rose by 1.2 percentage points to 58.2 per cent, although urban LFPR declined by 0.5 percentage point to 50.4 per cent.

Female participation improves

Female participation in the workforce continued to show improvement. Overall female LFPR rose to 34.8 per cent in August from 34.4 per cent in July, helped by an increase in rural female participation to 39.4 per cent from 38.8 per cent. Urban female LFPR was broadly stable at 25.4 per cent.

Compared with a year earlier, overall female LFPR increased by 1.1 percentage points, from 33.7 per cent in August 2025 to 34.8 per cent in August 2026. Rural female LFPR climbed by 2 percentage points to 39.4 per cent, while urban female LFPR fell by 0.7 percentage point to 25.4 per cent.

The female WPR also improved, rising to 33.0 per cent in August 2026 from 32.0 per cent a year earlier, the survey showed.

Male unemployment also eased. Overall male unemployment fell for the third consecutive month, reaching 4.9 per cent in August from 5.4 per cent in May. Rural male unemployment declined to 4.3 per cent from 4.6 per cent in July, although urban male unemployment edged up to 6.1 per cent from 5.9 per cent.

Among women, overall unemployment declined for the second consecutive month, reaching 5.1 per cent in August from 5.9 per cent in June. Rural female unemployment fell to 3.9 per cent from 4.3 per cent in July.
