The hosts, who displayed a wealth of batting ability, became just the third side in Women’s ODI history to surpass 400 runs.

India defeated Ireland on Wednesday, scoring 400 runs for the first time in an ODI innings under the leadership of captain Smriti Mandhana.

India is now just the third side in Women’s ODI history to accomplish this feat. New Zealand has previously scored 400 or more runs in an ODI innings four times, with their highest score of 491/4 against Ireland in 2018. In 1997, Australia defeated Denmark with a score of 412.

Opening batsmen Mandhana (135) and Pratika Rawal (154) scored tons to push the team total over the coveted threshold, giving them a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

As India pushed hard in the final overs, wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh then scorched a fast half-century.

Just one game has passed since India achieved their highest-ever Women’s ODI total of 370/5.

“There wasn’t much going on in my mind,” Rawal said, describing the team’s milestone effort. “We wanted to cross 400 and we managed to post around 430, so that’s really good.”

After Harmanpreet Kaur’s 171* and Deepti Sharma’s 188, Rawal’s 154, her first international century, is currently the third-highest total by an Indian batsman in women’s ODIs. Together with Mandhana, the 24-year-old struck a 233-run partnership for the first wicket.

Rawal acknowledged, “I was a bit slow when I was in my 70s, that 20-30 runs came slow but I covered it up later on,” before giving the Indian captain credit for boosting the offensive pace.

“It’s always a treat to watch her (Smriti Mandhana), she hit her shots with immense power, I don’t mind taking a backseat.”
