Ahmedabad will host the Senior Weightlifting World Championships in 2029, the sport’s international governing body announced on Sunday following its Executive Board meeting in Ningbo, China. It will be the first time that India hosts the senior Weightlifting World Championships. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 and 2030 Senior World Championships during the meeting. Russia’s capital Moscow was confirmed as the host city for the 2030 edition. The IWF Executive Board also awarded the 2028 World Youth Championships to Prishtina, Kosovo, while Caracas, Venezuela, will host the IWF World Junior Championships.
“All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success,” IWF General Secretary Jose Quiñones & said following the Executive Board vote.
“It is also worth noting that three of these four countries will be organising an IWF world event for the first time — Kosovo, Venezuela and India. This demonstrates our sport is growing worldwide and the staging of our competitions is highly desirable for many nations around the planet.”
The IWF said it took the decision to award four world championships together in order to strengthen and streamline its international calendar in the coming years.
Ahmedabad is also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The city is additionally India’s proposed host venue should the country secure the right to stage the 2036 Olympic Games.
