OneTag lets FASTag users switch their issuing bank without replacing the physical tag, Tag ID or vehicle registration number

FASTag users can now switch the bank linked to their FASTag without removing the sticker from their vehicle.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday launched OneTag, a new FASTag portability system that allows motorists to move their existing National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag from one participating issuer bank to another.

The system was launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.

Under OneTag, users can retain the same physical FASTag, Tag ID and vehicle registration number while changing the bank that manages the tag.

The portability facility will be available through the Rajmargyatra mobile application.

How to port FASTag from one bank to another

The process is designed to be completed digitally without getting a new physical FASTag.

Step 1: Open the Rajmargyatra app

Users will need to access the FASTag portability facility through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile application.

Step 2: Check FASTag portability eligibility

The existing FASTag will be checked before the portability request can proceed. Users will have to complete the required verification for the tag and vehicle.

Step 3: Give consent for portability

After the eligibility check, the user will have to provide consent to move the FASTag from the existing issuer to another participating bank.

Step 4: Select the new bank

Users can choose their preferred FASTag issuer from the participating banks available under the OneTag system. Nearly a dozen major banks, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, have joined the portability framework.

Step 5: Complete onboarding with the new bank

The new issuer will carry out the required customer verification and onboarding process before taking over the FASTag account.

Step 6: Porting is completed

Once the process is successfully completed, the new issuer becomes responsible for the FASTag service. The physical FASTag sticker already attached to the vehicle remains unchanged.

Do you need a new FASTag sticker?

No. This is the main change introduced by OneTag.

Until now, a customer wanting to change the FASTag issuing bank generally had to close the existing FASTag account, complete a fresh onboarding process and obtain another physical tag.

OneTag is designed to eliminate that process. The existing FASTag can be moved between participating issuers while retaining the same Tag ID and vehicle registration number.

What happens to the old FASTag account?

The existing bank does not simply disappear from the process.

Under the portability system, the old issuer remains responsible for matters linked to the previous FASTag account, including customer verification, refunds and pending transactions.

After the portability process is completed, the new issuer takes over the customer’s FASTag services.

This is intended to ensure that outstanding matters with the old issuer are settled while the tag moves to the new bank.

Will toll plazas need a new system?

No. Users do not need to do anything differently when paying tolls.

The existing NETC framework will continue to be used by toll plazas and acquiring banks. NPCI will update the issuer information in the NETC network when a FASTag is ported.

The system has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

NPCI will provide the central technology infrastructure for portability and facilitate the movement of the FASTag between participating issuers.

Why is FASTag portability being introduced?

The government says the move will give motorists greater choice and make it easier to change FASTag service providers.

It is also expected to reduce the need to manufacture, dispatch and reissue new physical FASTags every time a user changes the issuing bank.

FASTag penetration in India is now above 98 per cent, with around 13 crore NETC FASTags issued, of which about 6 crore are active.

FASTag works through radio-frequency identification technology. When a vehicle passes through an enabled toll plaza, the toll amount is automatically deducted from the account linked to the FASTag.

Because the NETC network allows FASTags issued by different banks and payment providers to work across the country’s toll plazas, OneTag extends that interoperability to the issuer itself.

In simple terms, users can now change the bank without changing the tag.

How much time and fuel does FASTag save?

Gadkari said the FASTag system has already reduced delays at toll plazas and saved around 71 crore hours of travel time every year.

He also said FASTag has helped save about 56 crore litres of fuel annually, with the value of the fuel saved estimated at around Rs 5,250 crore.

The economic value of the time saved was estimated at about Rs 68,500 crore a year, according to the minister.

The government is now also working towards barrier-free tolling, which is expected to further reduce waiting time, fuel use and pollution.

What else is changing for FASTag users?

The government is also planning an annual local pass for people living within 20 km of a toll plaza at a discounted price of around Rs 1,500.

At present, local passes are issued on a monthly basis. The proposed annual local pass would be separate from the FASTag annual pass that is valid for travel across the national highway network.

For motorists, however, the immediate change is OneTag. It means a FASTag does not necessarily have to be replaced simply because the user wants to move to another issuer bank.

Before starting the porting process, users should check whether their preferred bank is part of the OneTag portability system and ensure that any pending issue with the existing FASTag account is resolved.
