Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy was criticized by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for objecting to her speaking in Hindi during Thursday’s Lok Sabha debate on the Health Security and National Security Cess Bill.
Speaking on the Bill, Roy claimed that Sitharaman’s prior comments were difficult for him to understand because she talked in Hindi. “Nirmala ji spoke Hindi as well. He was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, “I couldn’t understand what she said because we are Bengalis; we don’t follow so much Hindi.”
Jagdambika Pal, the chair of the Lok Sabha, quickly stepped in and reminded Roy that real-time translation of parliamentary proceedings is available in several languages. He said, “You can go through it; it is already on the Parliament app.”
“You are Bengali, but you cannot speak of Hindi in this manner,” Pal warned Roy after he replied, “We are Bengalis, and we will remain Bengalis.”
Sitharaman entered the discussion and vehemently disagreed with Roy’s remark. “I have the ability to communicate in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and English. She asked, “How does it matter to the honorable member?”
I may speak in Hindi, I may speak in English, I may speak in Telugu or I may speak in Tamil. How does it matter to the Hon'ble MP? Because now, with the arrangements made by the Hon’ble Speaker, he can get the translation in any language that he desires.

“Because of the arrangements made by the Speaker, he can get a translation in any language he desires,” she continued, highlighting how translation technology allows MPs to comprehend speeches given in any language. And why can’t he understand me since I talked in Hindi? “
“He has not read the Bill thoroughly, and because he wants to divert from the topic, he is bringing all these things. I take objection, and it should be on record,” the minister stated, accusing Roy of trying to draw attention away from the legislation itself.
Sitharaman stated during the Bill’s introduction that it seeks to establish a “dedicated and predictable resource stream” for national security and health, two sectors of vital national importance.
