Jasprit Bumrah, who was named to India’s provisional team, has been ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy with a lower back injury, the BCCI announced on Tuesday (February 11). Harshit Rana has been appointed as Bumrah’s substitute in the eight-team event.

Bumrah, who was the standout performance in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia, captained the team in the final Test in Sydney but was forced to leave the field midway through Day 2 owing to a back issue and did not bowl the rest of the match. He was initially chosen to the side for the third ODI against England (subject to fitness), but his rehabilitation time has been extended.

The Indian selectors also added Varun Chakaravarthy to the final roster, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal from the original selection. Varun impressed in the recent T20I series against England and was called up at the last minute for the forthcoming ODIs. Varun took the most wickets in the five-match T20I series, with 14 in total. He made his ODI debut in the second game against England, finishing with 1-54.

Rana is also a newbie to the international circuit, making his debut in November 2024 at the Border-Gavaskar series. He has played two Tests, two ODIs, and a T20I to date, and he is the first Indian to take three wickets in his Test, T20I, and ODI debuts.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal is now one of the non-travelling substitutes, along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube, and the three will go to Dubai when needed.

India, who are in Group A, will face Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy on February 20. Their next game is against Pakistan on February 23, followed by their final Group game against New Zealand on March 2, all of which will take place in Dubai.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill (Vice-Captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, and Varun Chakaravarthy
