‘Baara Number’: Vir Das wraps shoot for his second directorial

Vir Das has wrapped shooting for his upcoming second directorial venture, Baara Number. The film stars Vir along with Sheeba Chaddha, Suhail Nayyar, Arunoday Singh, Ahsaas Channa, Atul Kulkarni, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Puja Sarup and Navin Kaushik in pivotal roles.

The film is a found-footage psychological thriller that has been co-produced by Jeff Lazarus, Kaushik Srinivasan (Third Frame Studio), Naresh Malik and Vir Das (Zazu Productions) with Kavi Shastri as the creative producer.

Vir calls the experience of making the film “intense and rewarding” as it challenged him along the way. “Making a psychological thriller is already a very specific exercise in restraint, atmosphere and character, but choosing to tell it through the found-footage format added an entirely different layer to the process. You don’t have the luxury of conventional filmmaking language in the same way. The camera itself becomes part of the world, and the audience has to feel like they are discovering the story rather than simply watching it unfold,” he said in a statement.

He added, “There were days when we were constantly questioning whether we were pushing the format enough, whether the performances felt organic enough, and whether the audience would feel that sense of unease and intimacy that the story demands.”

Vir said that the film represents another step in his filmmaking journey after he co-directed Happy Patel, which was released earlier this year. “My first film taught me so much about finding my voice behind the camera, and Baara Number has pushed me to question that voice, experiment with it and take it somewhere new. I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve created,” Vir added.

Happy Patel was a spy-comedy where Vir played the titular role and was joined by Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi and Mithila Palkar in the cast. The film was produced by Aamir Khan Productions with Aamir and Imran Khan making special appearances.
