Australia’s star opener Travis Head took to social media to troll Temba Bavuma after South Africa suffered their first defeat under his captaincy. Bavuma, who holds the record for the most matches as South Africa captain before a first defeat, saw his dream run come to an end on Tuesday as Pat Cummins and Co. handed his side a 214-run loss in Durban in the first Test. Opting to bat first, Australia scored 390 runs and then bowled out the hosts for 284. In their second innings, the visitors declared at 314/6, setting South Africa a target of 421. Chasing the daunting total, South Africa were bowled out for 206.
As Bavuma tasted his first Test defeat as captain, Head took to his Instagram story to poke fun at the South Africa skipper. Check out his post here:
After the game, Bavuma credited Australia for the victory.
“It’s not the way you want to start. You’ve got to give it to the Australians, the way they dominated the majority of the game. The way they stuck into us. And I think, for a lot of us who’ve had the experience of playing against them, you don’t want to give them that opportunity to play the game from the front. So there are a lot of questions and conversations that we’ll need to have,” the South Africa captain said.
“We can learn from the way they went about it from a batting and bowling point of view, but I think you’ve got to give it to them in terms of their performance,” he added.
This turned out to be Australia’s fourth consecutive Test win at Kingsmead, Durban, since 2006.
Speaking about South Africa’s poor record at the venue, Bavuma said, “A bit hard to say. We don’t get to play a great deal of cricket here in Durban. I think the last game we played here was against Sri Lanka, and we came out on top. Before that, yes, we didn’t have, I guess, the best of results, but it’s very hard to say. I think you’d have to pull up all the guys who’ve played here to get a proper understanding.”
