Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition and leader of the Congress, was sharply attacked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday for his message on Constitution Day. The party called it “deeply hypocritical” and accused the Congress of undermining the very document he was trying to celebrate.
Rahul Gandhi’s “hypocrisy” is denounced by the BJP
Rahul Gandhi’s tweet on X (previously Twitter) drew harsh criticism from BJP leader CR Kesavan, who compared it to “Aurangzeb preaching about tolerance” and “Mir Jafar lecturing on loyalty.” He maintained that because of its acts during the Emergency, the Congress had lost its moral right to discuss constitutional principles.
According to Kesavan, Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about the merits of our hallowed Constitution are as contradictory as Mir Jafar’s lectures on loyalty and as disingenuous as Aurangzeb’s sermons on tolerance. In addition, he said that during the 1975 Emergency, the Congress—known as the “Indira Nehru Congress”—had “murdered the Constitution,” even going so far as to change the Preamble in order to consolidate control.
Kesavan said that Rahul Gandhi frequently “slanders the democratic process” and “maligns constitutional institutions,” accusing him of having “scant regard or respect” for Dr. BR Ambedkar’s Constitution.
He also said that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress should “seek forgiveness and tender a public apology” to the country and future generations on Constitution Day for the “assault on democracy.”
Here is Prime Minister Modi, who honored Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Indian people in a message to the nation’s inhabitants on Constitution Day. Conversely, people who support dynasty politics and undermine democracy are discussing preserving the Constitution. The Supreme Court and the Election Commission are examples of constitutional institutions that Rahul Gandhi’s family does not trust. Shehzad Poonawalla attacked Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, saying, “They make ‘vote chori’ accusations against the EC and refuse to accept Supreme Court verdicts.”
On Constitution Day, what did Rahul Gandhi say?
In his article, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the Constitution is a “sacred promise” to all Indians, irrespective of their caste, religion, location, language, or socioeconomic status. He characterized it as a defender of justice, equality, and respect as well as a shield for the underprivileged.
He remarked, “The Constitution of India is not just a book; it is a sacred promise made to every citizen,” claiming that as long as the Constitution is upheld, all Indians’ rights are protected.
Gandhi declared that it was his responsibility to safeguard the Constitution “from every assault” and urged people to oppose any perceived attempts to erode constitutional guarantees. He concluded by wishing everyone a happy Constitution Day and said, “Jai Hind, Jai Constitution.”

With the BJP and Congress exchanging jabs, what is usually seen as a day of contemplation on India’s democratic roots swiftly became a political hot potato. Rahul Gandhi took the opportunity to advocate for the defense of constitutional principles, but the BJP retaliated by drawing attention to what it claims are past transgressions by the Congress.
