Air India (AI), controlled by the Tata Group, has stepped up its fleet growth ambition by confirming an order for 100 new Airbus aircraft.
Ten widebody A350s and ninety narrowbody A320 Family aircraft, including A321neo versions, are part of the purchase.
Airbus Order for Air India
Air India previously ordered 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing last year, which this most recent acquisition expands upon. With the new purchase, Air India has increased its total order of Airbus aircraft from 250 to 350 (40 A350 and 210 A320 Family aircraft).
Air India chose Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to support maintenance for its expanding fleet of A350 aircraft in addition to the aircraft purchase. By providing full engineering services and integrated component support, the maintenance contract seeks to maximize fleet performance and reliability.
The expansion’s strategic justification was emphasized by Tata Sons and Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran. He pointed to India’s young population’s globalization, growing infrastructure, and swift passenger growth as the main factors influencing fleet expansion.
According to Chandrasekaran, “Air India will be on a path to greater growth with these additional 100 Airbus aircraft, supporting our mission of building a world-class airline that connects India globally.”
The CEO of Airbus, Guillaume Faury, was excited about the ongoing collaboration. Faury acknowledged the impressive expansion of the Indian aviation industry and stated, “We are committed to supporting Air India’s ‘Vihaan.AI’ transformation plan under Tata’s leadership.”
