In search of the dreamy promise of snow-covered slopes and traditional mountain sports, tourists swarm to the Himalayan foothills of Manali in Himachal Pradesh every winter. However, a recent viral video has brought attention to the discrepancy between expectations and reality that several travelers experienced while visiting in December. A tourist to the area posted video of what appears to be a snow activity site online. All that is seen is a thin line of snow that appears to be spread out across otherwise dry ground.
Some local guides led tourists interested in skiing and other winter activities to this little area of snow, according to the guy who was recording. He referred to it as a “scam” because the snow was purportedly imported. The surrounding terrain appeared to be devoid of natural snowfall. The similar disparity is shown by the visitor filming the video. In stark contrast to the few square meters of white flakes, the popular video depicts stony, snow-free terrain. On this stretch, travelers can be seen renting equipment, posing for pictures, and trying ski-like activities.
Many Instagram users reacted with dozens of laughing emojis because they thought the scene in the viral video was hilarious. Some responded with caustic comments. Some questioned why people voluntarily engage in these kinds of activities. Check out a few of the remarks below:
“Isse Jayda barf to just put me in the fridge.” [ “There is more ice in my fridge than here.” ]
“Green screen bhi lagai hai bhai… baaki ki snow edit mein add krlena.” [ “They should also put a green screen and add the remaining snow while editing.” ]
“Brother, I really feel very ashamed just by looking at it.”
“We refused to do any activity when we saw the condition and took a full refund.”
“Why didn’t you visit during the snow season?”
When to Go to Manali for Winter Sports and Real Snowfall
If you want to experience winter activities or witness natural snowfall while traveling, time is crucial. Between late January and early February, Manali usually has regular snowfall, particularly following active western disturbances. December can be erratic; lower tourist areas frequently stay dry, especially during milder winter months, while higher elevations may experience snow. Fresh snowfall and chilly weather are necessary for skiing and other snow-based sports. Compared to the early holiday season rush periods, these conditions are more consistent later in the winter.
Snow sports enthusiasts should also be aware that many activities are highly dependent on weather patterns in the weeks leading up to the trip, not just the calendar month. Avoiding disappointment can be achieved by checking government advisories, snow reports, and local weather updates closer to trip dates.
Nearby Substitutes With More Consistent Snow
Several neighboring locations typically provide better and more reliable snow conditions when Manali receives less snowfall:
Solang Valley (upper reaches): Because of its higher elevation than Manali town, it frequently receives snow earlier and holds onto it longer in the winter.
Kufri, which is close to Shimla, is well-known for its winter sports facilities, particularly during the busiest snowy weeks.
Auli, Uttarakhand: Known for its organized slopes and consistent winter weather, Auli is one of India’s most dependable skiing locations.
The likelihood of seeing true Himalayan snow can be greatly increased by selecting locations based on altitude, recent snowfall, and activity infrastructure.
