Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay sparked political controversy on Thursday after calling on the Union government to provide a “clear legislative assurance” that southern states will not lose parliamentary representation as a result of successful population control efforts. Speaking at the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram, Vijay argued that such an undertaking was essential to maintain fairness, safeguard federal balance, and bolster state confidence in democratic institutions. However, opposition parties quickly seized on the fact that he stopped short of reiterating a recent resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly on August 12, which demanded that Lok Sabha seats be permanently capped at 543 and state allocations kept strictly as they are.

The remarks drew sharp criticism from both the DMK and the AIADMK, who accused the Chief Minister of altering his stance on the delimitation process. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai claimed Vijay had executed a clear flip-flop on the matter, while the AIADMK described the TVK government’s position as an outright U-turn. In a statement posted on social media, the AIADMK IT Wing pointed out that Vijay’s current demand mirrors the Union government’s existing position, questioning why the administration staged the assembly resolution if it intended to shift its ground so quickly.

In response, the TVK dismissed the allegations, asserting that its policy remains entirely consistent. The party’s IT Wing clarified that Vijay’s address offered a broad strategic vision to protect southern representation, whilst the earlier assembly resolution laid out the actionable framework for achieving it. They accused opponents of circulating misleading claims out of a lack of understanding. Law and Energy Resources Minister CTR Nirmalkumar also defended the administration, confirming to reporters that the TVK’s stance remains unchanged and that the party continues to advocate for keeping the total number of Lok Sabha seats fixed at 543.
