Razorpay announced on Thursday that Indian travelers will soon be able to use UPI to make payments in Malaysia, marking a significant step towards bringing India’s digital payment innovation to a worldwide audience.
Curlec, Razorpay’s Malaysian subsidiary, is working with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global division of the National Payments Corporation of India, to make the change.
The partnership, which was officially announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, is a significant step in extending UPI’s acceptability outside of India.
Millions of Indian visitors traveling to Malaysia will be able to use their favorite UPI apps to instantly and securely pay local companies without the need for foreign cards or the difficulties of currency exchange thanks to this integration.
Over a million Indian tourists traveled to Malaysia in 2024, spending over Rs 110 billion, a significant increase of 71.7% from the year before. The necessity for more straightforward, cashless, and economical payment methods is highlighted by the increasing number of travelers between the two countries.
It is anticipated that the launch of UPI in Malaysia will facilitate transactions, lower the cost of foreign exchange, and benefit both tourists and local business owners. The way Indians conduct business has been completely transformed by UPI, the country’s premier real-time payment system.
It handled around 20 billion payments in September 2025 alone, providing safe and quick money transfers on a never-before-seen scale.
Malaysian companies may reach a sizable audience of Indian tourists who trust and favor UPI for their regular payments by integrating with this strong ecosystem.
Through Razorpay Curlec’s platform, Malaysian businesses will be able to receive payments directly under the new agreement. Settlements will be made in ringgit (RM), the local currency. As in India, this will enable users to make instantaneous payments through their UPI-enabled applications.
Razorpay co-founder and managing director Shashank Kumar commented on the news, saying, “UPI has totally changed the way India pays, showing what’s possible when innovation and inclusion come together at scale.”
“With Curlec, we’re bringing that same excitement to Malaysia, enabling companies and tourists to take advantage of the ease, speed, and trust that make digital payments in India so potent. This is about building a truly borderless fintech future throughout Asia, not simply about payments,” he stated.
