Tensions between Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s administration were heightened by the comments, especially since Musk just resigned as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

Washington D.C.: Billionaire Elon Musk blasted the Senate’s most recent version of Donald Trump’s massive tax and spending package on Saturday, calling it “utterly insane and destructive” just as the chamber was getting ready to begin debating the roughly 1,000-page measure.

Musk wrote on social media, “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,” cautioning Republican leaders against advancing the plan. Adding, “Utterly insane and destructive,” “It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.”

Particularly after Musk’s recent resignation as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), the comments rekindled tensions between the Tesla CEO and Trump’s government. His vocal criticism presents yet another obstacle for Republican Senate leaders who are rushing to complete the bill before Trump’s July 4 deadline.

Musk also criticized the House version of the plan earlier this month, calling it a “disgusting abomination.”

“This Congressional budget package is a monstrous, obscene, pork-filled mess. Those who voted for it should feel ashamed since they realize they made a mistake. At the time, Musk wrote, “You know it.”

Musk and Trump had a well publicized falling out over his remarks, although Musk has since taken steps to mend fences. He intensified his criticism on Saturday, publishing a number of remarks casting doubt on the bill’s general economic ramifications and energy policy.

Jesse Jenkins, an energy systems engineer at Princeton, harshly criticized the legislation’s energy measures, which Musk echoed in one post.

“The Republicans’ One Big Horrible Bill has terrible energy provisions! Who desires this? The nation’s automakers are against it. It is not wanted by electric utilities. Developers of data centers do not want it. Energy-intensive manufacturers do not want it,” Jenkins stated.

“Good question,” Musk said. “Who?”

He said, “this bill raises the debt ceiling by $5 TRILLION, the biggest increase in history, putting America in the fast lane to debt slavery.”

The 940-page plan combines significant tax reductions, increased expenditure on immigration and defense, and severe cuts to social programs. It cuts financing for food stamps and Medicaid.

Trump’s $350 billion border and security proposal, which includes $46 billion for border wall expansion, $45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention beds, and the employment of 10,000 new ICE officers with signing bonuses of $10,000, is a major focus.

The law supports Trump’s promise to begin the biggest mass deportation campaign in US history, with a goal of removing around a million people annually.
