The plot, which is set in a small South Dakota hamlet, centers on the mayhem that breaks out when an expensive and rare artifact turns up on the illegal market. A vicious thug who works for a dubious antiques dealer soon turns their voyage into a perilous one.

As other characters join the conflict, such as an indigenous leader and a damaged woman attempting to flee a traumatic past, the plot becomes increasingly complex. The struggle for survival that ensues is intense, action-packed, and motivated by desperation, greed, and ulterior motivations.
Early reviews were positive for Americana when it debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film and TV Festival in March 2023. Lionsgate purchased the film’s worldwide distribution rights in 2024. On August 22, 2025, it will now be released in theaters nationwide.
