Apple TV has released the first trailer for Nocturne, its upcoming 10-episode crime drama starring Liev Schreiber, Stephen Graham and Zazie Beetz. Schreiber plays Jonah Lynn, a former soldier who leaves Philadelphia’s homicide department for a quieter life in western Pennsylvania, only to find himself drawn into a new investigation when people begin disappearing and Jurek Walter, a serial killer played by Graham, appears to be connected to the case. Beetz stars as FBI agent Saga Bauer, Jonah’s surrogate daughter, who goes undercover to obtain information from Walter.
The trailer introduces Walter as an elusive threat. He has been held in the basement of Riverside Psychiatric Hospital beneath heavy security, yet disappearances begin again after a victim connected to his crimes unexpectedly turns up alive. Jonah is drawn into the investigation as the police and FBI attempt to determine how Walter could be influencing events while imprisoned. Saga subsequently goes undercover inside the facility to question him directly.
The series is based on the bestselling Joona Linna crime novels by Lars Kepler, the pseudonym used by Swedish authors Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril. Nocturne draws specifically from Lazarus and The Sandman, two books from the series. The ten published novels have sold 20 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 40 languages, according to Apple TV.
Rowan Joffé, known for Tin Star and The Ballad of a Small Player, created Nocturne for television and serves as writer, executive producer and co-showrunner. John Hlavin, whose credits include Shooter and The Man Who Fell to Earth, also developed the series, writes and executive produces and serves as showrunner. Tim Van Patten directs the first two episodes and executive produces. Schreiber and Beetz also executive produce, with Beetz producing through her Sleepy Poppy company.
The ensemble includes Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr alongside the three leads. Graham’s casting places him in a markedly different role following his acclaimed performance in Adolescence, with the actor playing Walter as a calculating killer whose influence extends beyond the confines of his prison cell.
Nocturne premieres globally on Apple TV on October 30, with its first two episodes releasing together. New episodes will follow every Friday through December 25.
