When Ajith Kumar and Vijay shared the screen: a look at ‘Rajavin Parvaiyile’

Actor and racer Ajith Kumar’s meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and former actor C Joseph Vijay has gone viral on the internet. The two, pitted as rivals in cinema, met at the Silverstone racing circuit in London on Saturday, September 12, after Vijay was invited to wave the ceremonial green flag at the Le Mans Cup race in which Ajith participated.

The moment has certainly brought a wave of nostalgia for their fans, as a meeting between the two stars is extremely rare. But did you know that, long before they became two of the industry’s biggest stars, they shared the screen in the movie Rajavin Parvaiyile (1995)?

Yes, you read that right. 30 years ago, when both Ajith and Vijay were young actors still finding their footing in the industry, they starred together in a romantic drama as best friends.

The film, directed by Janaki Soundar, starred Indraja and Gayathri Sasthiri as the female leads. The cast also featured Vadivukkarasi, Janagaraj, Sathyapriya, Vennira Aadai Moorthy, Vadivelu, and Charuhasan, among others. The film had music scored by Ilaiyaraaja.

Though several filmmakers have, over the years, attempted to bring the two stars together on screen once again, Raajavin Parvaiyile remains their only on-screen collaboration. Notably, the film was re-released in Tamil Nadu theatres on 6 January 2023, days before Ajith’s film Thunivu clashed with Vijay’s film Varisu at the box office.

Nearly three decades after Rajavin Parvaiyile, with Vijay and Ajith having taken very different paths, their reunion at Silverstone offers a striking full-circle moment — from sharing a screen to sharing a moment at the racetrack!
