US factory activity strengthens sharply in August as manufacturers report improving current conditions, stronger future orders and a major jump in investment plans.
US manufacturing activity is showing signs of a powerful revival, with a key regional survey pointing to a sharp improvement in current factory conditions and an even stronger outlook for the months ahead.
The Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s index of current business conditions rose 6 points in August to 47.4, its highest level since April 2021. The survey covers manufacturers across eastern and central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.
The latest reading marks a significant improvement in factory activity and suggests that manufacturers in the region are experiencing much stronger operating conditions.
More striking was the improvement in expectations. The Philly Fed’s index of future business conditions jumped 39.2 points to 73.6, reaching its highest level since the 1980s. The increase was also the largest monthly rise on record for the index, signalling a dramatic shift in manufacturers’ expectations.
The outlook for new orders strengthened sharply as well. The index of future new orders surged 30.9 points to 66.0, its highest level since June 2021. The jump indicates that manufacturers are increasingly confident that demand will remain strong and order books will improve in the coming months.
Investment intentions also pointed to stronger momentum. The six-month forecast for capital expenditures climbed 18.1 points to 48.2, its highest level since the 1970s.
The combination of stronger current activity and improving forward-looking indicators suggests that the US manufacturing sector could be entering a more sustained period of expansion. Rising expectations for new orders could encourage manufacturers to increase production, while stronger capital spending plans point to greater willingness among companies to invest in capacity and equipment.
The data also offers an important signal for the broader US economy. Manufacturing represents a relatively small share of overall economic output compared with services, but changes in factory activity can influence business investment, employment, trade and demand for industrial goods.
The sharp improvement in the Philly Fed survey therefore points to a US manufacturing sector gaining momentum after a period of weakness. If the improvement in orders and investment expectations translates into actual production growth, factories could become an increasingly important source of economic strength in the months ahead.
