Iga Swiatek advanced to the US Open quarterfinals by easily defeating Russian 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour. This victory brought her Grand Slam winning streak to 11 matches as she seeks a second US Open title.
“I felt like in the beginning she played fast but later on I felt in my bubble, in the zone,” says Swiatek. “I’m happy with the quality and my serve.”
The Polish second seed will next face Amanda Anisimova, in a rematch of the Wimbledon final, which Swiatek won 6-0, 6-0. The American defeated Brazilian 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Swiatek has reached the quarterfinals or better at all four majors in a single season for the first time, and she is chasing her seventh Grand Slam championship.
Men’s eighth seed Alex de Minaur advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi.
De Minaur overpowered the world number 435 with eight breaks, earning his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal berth. However, he has never progressed beyond this stage.
“Ultimately, this is where I want to be — I want to be playing for big titles, I want to be in contention,” said De Minaur, who is currently in his third US Open quarterfinal.
He will now play Felix Auger-Aliassime, who overcame Andrey Rublev in straight sets for the Canadian 25th seed’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance in three years.
Auger-Aliassime triumphed 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, only his second win over the Russian in nine attempts.
In 2021, the 25-year-old reached the US Open semi-finals, his deepest Grand Slam run to date.
“It feels better than the first time,” Auger-Aliassime said of his return to the quarterfinals in New York.
“I guess the first time at 21, I was on my way up. Experience setbacks, injuries, and lack of confidence. It feels much better to be back in the quarterfinals for the second time.”
