US President Donald Trump defended his strong tariff policies once more, saying they make the US the “richest” and “most respected” nation in the world. The President called his opponents “fools” and asserted that all Americans, with the exception of the wealthy, would soon get at least $2,000 (about Rs 1,77,000) from tariff money collected by his government.
The comments were made a few days after the US Supreme Court cast doubt on the legitimacy of Trump’s broad tariffs in a case that could have a significant impact on the world economy and test Trump’s authority.
Trump’s Remarks
“Those who oppose tariffs are idiots! With nearly zero inflation and a record stock market price, we are currently the richest and most respected nation in the world. 401(k)s are at their highest point ever. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “We are receiving trillions of dollars and will soon start paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 trillion.”
Record investment in the United States, with companies and plants expanding everywhere. Everyone will receive a payout of at least $2000 per person (not including those with high incomes!), he continued.
Additionally, he asserted that “businesses are pouring into the USA ONLY BECAUSE OF TARIFFS” as a result of his tariff strategy, which has increased domestic investment.
He also questioned the extent of presidential authority in an effort to defend his acts that upset the balance of international trade.
“So, let’s clarify this? Trump wrote, “The President of the United States is not permitted to impose a simple tariff on a foreign country, even for reasons of NATIONAL SECURITY, but is permitted (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop ALL TRADE with a foreign country (which is far more onerous than a tariff!) and LICENSE a foreign country.”
“Our magnificent Founders did not have that in mind! The entire situation is absurd! We can’t impose tariffs on other nations, but they can? It’s their dream! Due to tariffs alone, businesses are flooding the United States. Has this not been communicated to the United States Supreme Court? “What on earth is happening?” He continued.
US Supreme Court Regarding Trump Tariffs
Trump’s outburst followed last week when the Supreme Court’s conservative and liberal justices sharply questioned the attorney for Trump’s administration about whether the president had overreached Congress by imposing tariffs under a 1977 law intended for use in times of national emergency.
However, some of the conservative justices also hinted that they were struggling to acknowledge the inherent authority that presidents have when interacting with other nations, indicating that the court might be sharply split on the case’s outcome. The conservative majority on the court is 6-3.
The justices questioned US Solicitor General D. John Sauer during the arguments on whether Trump’s use of this statute to impose tariffs with an indefinite term constituted a significant executive branch action requiring explicit congressional authorization.
The administration made these arguments in appeals after lower courts determined that his extraordinary use of the relevant legislation to apply the tariffs was beyond his power. Twelve US states, the most of which were run by Democrats, and businesses impacted by the tariffs contested them.
Over the next ten years, the tariffs—taxes on imported goods—may cost the US trillions of dollars. Trump has put a lot of pressure on the Supreme Court to uphold tariffs, which he has used as a crucial tool for both foreign and economic policy.
