Beijing has advised Washington to stay inside four delicate “red lines” in order to protect ties between the two nations, days after Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President met.
“China’s four red lines are Taiwan, democracy and human rights, path and system, and development rights,” stated China’s ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, in a virtual speech to Chinese and American businesses at the US-China Business Council in Shanghai on Monday. We’re hoping the US side won’t go beyond and cause problems. Cooperation is preferable to a zero-sum game, stability is preferable to instability, and dialogue is preferable to confrontation.
The informal ties between the United States and Taiwan have long annoyed China.
CNN reports that Beijing has already reacted angrily to what it perceives as US attempts to meddle in domestic Chinese matters, including American diplomats raising concerns about alleged human rights abuses and restrictions on freedom of expression within China’s strictly regulated political system.
Days after Xi and Trump’s historic encounter on the fringes of an international conference in South Korea, the Chinese envoy made the most recent comments. Since Trump returned to the White House this year, they had not met before.
“China and the United States do not always agree, and occasional disagreements are normal. Respecting one another’s primary concerns and basic interests is crucial, according to Xie.
“It would be unacceptable to make zero-sum calculations, cause any new disruption, and say one thing while doing another,” he stated.
In order to reassure our nations and the global economy with tangible measures and results, the top priority is to implement the agreements made at the economic and trade talks in Kuala Lumpur and the consensus achieved by the two presidents during their meeting. The envoy emphasized that it would be unacceptable to conduct zero-sum calculations, cause any fresh disruption, say one thing while doing another, and even attempt to make money off of the suffering of others.
